High End vs Drug Store | YSL Babydoll and L'Oreal Telescopic

Majority of us know that often times, high end is better then drugstore. However, is that always the case? I love high end mascaras. I have had okay results with drug store mascaras, except for a few exceptions. While looking at the plethora of mascaras I have (majority are high end deluxe samples), I noticed that both the YSL Babydoll and L'Oreal Telescopic Carbon Black seemed similar.

Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils Babydoll
YSL Babydoll mascara is "a unique mascara with a patented formula that provides defined volume, lash-by-lash separation, and up-to-24-hour wear...The patented formula creates long-lasting volume and intense color that is evenly dispersed with no flakes, clumps, or smudges for up to 24 hours." The full size comes with 0.2 oz of product for $30.

Although I do not have the full size (of which I adore the packaging), the deluxe size is still very pretty. The formula is nice and does last all day without flakes, clumps, or smudging. I haven't tested out the 24 hour claim because I take off my makeup every night before bed. The brush is duo-length and grasps every lash and coats it evenly to provide length and separation.

L'Oreal Telescopic Carbon Black
L'Oreal Telescopic Carbon Black mascara claims to provide "lashes with dramatic length and 2X the intensity." The mascara is suppose to lengthen your lashes up to 60% then original lashes. It also provides 2x more intensity then other L'Oreal black mascaras. The mascara comes with 0.27 oz for anywhere between $7-11, depending what drugstore you buy it from.

L'Oreal Telescopic mascara has a great black color and can be built up with several coats. The formula may get a bit clumpy if you apply too many coats, but I usually only do 2 full coats and have no problems. The only issue I have with this mascara is that it doesn't fully separate my lashes. It's a good thing it wasn't a claim or else I would be very disappointed. It may flake slightly, but I haven't noticed much of it. I haven't seen any smudging either.

  Comparison
L-R: YSL Babydoll and L'Oreal Telescopic Carbon Black
On the left is YSL and on the right is L'Oreal. The YSL Babydoll brush has two sized bristles all around the brush that grab onto and separate each lash while fulling coating it. The L'Oreal brush only has bristles on the edges. As you can see above, there are four "flat" sides that do not have any bristles. I find this to be the issue preventing the mascara from fully separating the lashes.

Above you can see the difference between the two mascaras. Although L'Oreal appears to give a little more length, my eye lashes still look sparse. However, this mascara is not meant for volume, just length and color intensity. On the right, YSL Babydoll is worn and although it provides some length, it separates my lashes making them look fuller, which I appreciate.

From this angle, both mascaras look about the same length, but again, you can see which one separates more creating fuller lashes.

Here is a video that I did featuring a demo of the L'Oreal Telescopic Carbon Black mascara:

Which do I recommend?
Both are great mascaras but each are going to have it's pros and cons. I find that L'Oreal Telescopic lengthens a little bit more then YSL Babydoll, but doesn't separate lashes as well as YSL. On the other side, I find that YSL is very pricey compared to L'Oreal.

It all boils down to which one you would rather have for the price. If you don't mind paying the $30 for a mascara that separates and lengthens, then go ahead and purchase it. But, I personally think I would purchase L'Oreal again just because it is cheaper and can get almost similar results for a fraction of the price of YSL. If I really want to have separation of lashes, I can use my metal mascara comb to make my lashes fuller.

  2. There is a slight difference but I agree, it does depend on what you are prepared to pay x

  3. What a helpful side-by-side comparison! They both look lovely, but I think I'd opt for the YSL since I like me some volume! xo

    1. The YSL is lovely, but I feel like $30 is a lot to shell out on a mascara! I don't mind paying $20, but no higher than that ;)

  5. I think I prefer the YSL one in this instance. I prefer a good natural definition to lashes rather than a clumpier effect. It might be an ok buy in a pinch, but if you're used to the YSL look, this might be a let down. I've been using the Revlon Photoready mascara lately for a review coming up, and it looks like the brush is similar to the YSL one, and it gives great definition. You might want to give it a try. I'm loving it!
